Mayday 2009 – “Massive Moments”
The eve of May 1 found 25,000 ravers once again streaming to Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle for the techno event of the year: Mayday. The slogan for this year’s 15-hour marathon was “Massive Moments,” and Werne-based service provider Satis&fy made sure that the sound system and the results it yielded lived up to the hype. The Satis&fy team led by Technical Director Jörn Busch opted wisely for a state-of-the-art Electro-Voice system.
The system specifications for the marathon are impressive: 64 Electro-Voice TG7 amplifiers delivering 350,000 Watts, and 32 X-Line tops and 56 Xsubs were distributed through seven sound stations. “Massive Moments” indeed! The decision to use X-Line for Mayday was made in the spring when Satis&fy optimized its inventory. Eight weeks prior to the event, the team hired Westfalenhalle 1 for seven days to allow for exhaustive testing by Satis&fy employees and freelancers alongside a delegation of sound reinforcement experts from Electro-Voice headquarters in the United States. Rüdiger Nürnberg, the man responsible for Satis&fy’s arsenal of sound equipment, was quickly convinced by X-Line. “Not only in terms of overall loudness but also in point of homogeneity and even level distribution, X-Line with its new presets is fully convincing,” says Nürnberg, who knows very well the enormous loads carried by sound systems at events of this magnitude. “Normal bass loudspeakers in particular reach their thermal limits very quickly at these types of events,” he adds, “but the X-Line rose magnificently to the occasion. And once again, without a single glitch!” Mayday in Dortmund, or the night leading into it, lasts 15 hours – a marathon for ravers who push sound technicians and sound reinforcement equipment to their limits. The status of the event among techno aficionados can be gauged by the caliber of the DJs and live acts that appear there, this year’s lineup included WestBam, Sven Väth, and Paul van Dyke. 24x Electro-Voice Xvls 8x Electro-Voice Xvlt 16x Electro-Voice XLCDVX (center fill and in-fill) 56x Electro-Voice Xsub 4x Electro-Voice Xi-2123 (nearfield) 64x Electro-Voice TG7 amplifiers 1x Electro-Voice NetMax N8000
