Electro-Voice upgrade trajectory for UK’s Event Sound, from Phoenix to XLC
Within a year of purchasing a stock of EV Phoenix loudspeakers and CP Series amplifiers, Berkshire, UK-based PA rental company Event Sound is stepping up its commitment to, and investment in, Electro-Voice loudspeakers with an order for an XLC line-array system, to be delivered at the end of the summer.
One of the first companies in the UK to embrace the high-SPL, compact Phoenix enclosure design, Event Sound has found the scale of its projects steadily increasing, recently completing its biggest show to date, an outdoor charity concert, headlined by Nick Heyward, for 2,000 people. “We have evolved a long way from our origins as a dry-hire operation,“ says Nick Billinghurst. “The success we’ve had with the Phoenix system, winning a lot of open-air events such as festivals, has given us the confidence and the custom to upgrade our inventory to full line-array.“
Event Sound’s successful rise through the ranks of regional sound providers is a perfect match with the original design objective of the Phoenix system, aimed at live sound professionals looking for high-SPL, long-throw, ground-stacked systems with flying capabilities. With just eight top and mid-hi cabinets, eight PX2181 subs, and six ZX5 enclosures for stage and engineer monitors, Event Sound can cater for sizeable shows, indoor and outdoor. “It’s a very balanced system,“ says Billinghurst, “and using EV’s dedicated new DC-One controller makes it very manageable. At a recent outdoor event with Nick Heyward, also featuring national treasure Rolf Harris, we were easily able to comply with the environmental noise regulations; Phoenix is so directional and provides coverage with very little overspill outside the audience areas.“
Event Sound is a keen user of Electro-Voice microphones, putting N/DYM 967s into the hands of Rolf Harris and Nick Heyward, as well as using RE410s and the new PL Series mics on all instruments and drums. “The show ran for 12 hours and a lot of performers - Soul’d Out, Temposhark, The Plants, and Burdock - praised the faultless performance of the microphones and the Phoenix system.“
Event Sound uses EV’s CP4000S to power the system, the flagship of the Precision Series ™ Compact line and the perfect companion to all Phoenix loudspeakers. The CP4000S delivers stable maximum output power - 2 x 2100 watts into 2 ohms and 2 x 1500 into 4 ohms - in an extremely lightweight 8.7 kg (19 lbs), 2RU package. The Phoenix system’s capability is further boosted by use of EV’s new DC-One two-in-six-out processor to handle all the loudspeaker and amplifier configurations. This unit, based on a powerful SHARC processor, allows users to utilize easily and fully its serious digital horsepower and high-end audio performance.
