Electro-Voice lines London’s New Year parade route

January 6th, 2009

An estimated 500,000 people turned out to watch London’s annual New Year’s Day Parade, one of the city’s biggest charity fund-raising events. Marching bands, 1,000 cheerleaders, Chelsea pensioners, and car clubs were among the performers who wound their way from Parliament Square to Green Park.

Scores of Electro-Voice Sx Series loudspeakers were deployed along the 2.2-mile route to provide live commentary, announcements, and general sound reinforcement for the largest crowd in the event’s 23-year history.

Watford-based NSR Communications has provided PA for this event since it began in 1986. NSR favored “the workhorse speakers“ from EV’s Sx series, which they placed along the route and beside the large grandstands that marked the six “sites’ of the parade, which included such popular locations as Piccadilly Circus and Parliament Square where EV Sx300 and Sx80 cabinets were used with 10 units in each site.

EV’s Sx300 endures as one of the world’s best lightweight, high-power speaker systems, conveniently protected by a weather-resistant enclosure. James Walker, leader of the NSR Communications team, preferred to use the Sx80s to cover the grandstands, and to aim the Sx300s at spectators on the other side of the road. Walker comments:

“Leading up to the finishing line and outside the Ritz on Piccadilly, we had 6,000 people on the pavement and in the grandstands, which we serviced with a 90-meter run of speakers, all running low-impedance.“

The only blight on the day, aside from freezing temperatures, was the delayed arrival of some of the marching bands and cheerleader performers who were grounded in America by severe winter storms. John Ellis from Shuttlesound, EV’s distributor in the UK, braved the cold weather to watch the parade. He comments:

“What a great way to start the New Year! There were so many marching bands, old cars, festival floats, and cheerleaders - the commentary was crystal-clear through the Sx300s - it all added up to make a really exciting day, even with the inevitable challenges at carnival-type events like this.“
