More than just a day at the races for Electro-Voice

July 24th, 2008

The popular Newmarket Nights are evening horse-race meetings followed by a concert. Artists performing this year include Madness, Jools Holland, Boyzone, and Girls Aloud. Organised by Liz Hobbs Concerts & Events Ltd, part of the Liz Hobbs Group (LHG), the open-air formula is repeated at other leading tracks including Aintree, Ayr, York, Haydock, Epsom, and Sandown, under an exclusive entertainment, concerts, and development contract with Jockey Club Racecourses, which owns racecourses all over the UK.

Sound reinforcement systems for the Newmarket Nights season have recently been deployed to handle the increasingly busy summer season, and the main PA now features Electro-Voice XLC line array and Tour Grade amplifiers. Neal Allen of EV distributor Shuttlesound explains, “the turning point came with Status Quo; a small system had been provided for 5,000 people, and then 20,000 turned up! Since then, the organizers have steadily upped the ante, and are now booking sell-out headliners like Bryan Adams and Girls Aloud. The sound systems have been upgraded to keep pace.“

Of all the racecourses that host the post-race concerts, Newmarket is the odd-one-out, according to Neal Allen: “The audience area is very wide at about 120 meters, but relatively shallow, as they stand between the grandstands and the racetrack. Front-to-back, the distance is just 45 meters, although there are corporate hospitality areas on the other side of the track. We can take a standard configuration to all the other courses, but at Newmarket we need more width coverage, with additional side-hangs.“

Bryan Adams attracted a record number of nearly 25,000 people to the Newmarket course, and the PA system had to be extended accordingly. From the powerhouse under the stage, where EV Tour Grade amplifiers were running, controlled by the NetMax system processor and matrix, signal was sent to main left and right PA arrays of nine XLC DVX cabinets. On one side of the stage, two further clusters were flown from the grandstand, facing the crowd, each with four XLC modules. On the other side, in addition to a four cabinet cluster of XLC, a tower of six XLE cabs was provided to handle the far field. In total, 18 Xsubs were used. IRIS-Net software was used to operate the system-check diagnostics; EV LAPS line array prediction software was used to work out the angles for the XLC hangs.

“The Bryan Adams crowd is the largest seen so far at Newmarket; up until now, the maximum has been around 20,000,“ says Allen. “The XLC cabinets with the new DVX low-frequency/mid-bass woofers are ideal for this project. Depending on the artist and the crowd size, the system spec varies between six and nine cabinets per side, and, for Bryan Adams, Shuttlesound provided some of the super-compact XLE cabinets to supplement the system at its furthest point. The quality of the system is excellent, and the dispersion is phenomenal-because there are only fields beyond the racecourse, the sound goes for days; you can hear it in Newmarket town, 5 miles away.“
