Thrice Grammy Award-winning Flaming Lips tour with EV mics and speakers

June 27th, 2008

Currently, the Flaming Lips are touring the world with Electro-Voice microphones and speakers as part of their sonic arsenal. Known for their fantastic and metaphysical musical epics, the Flaming Lips are a musical category unto themselves. And their live shows are beyond anything most concertgoers have ever experienced, what with Wayne’s homemade gadgets, video camera toys, giant inflatable ball (with Wayne inside) surfing over the crowd, puppetry, and animal costumes, for which the band is best known.

Over the course of the last 20 years the band has collected three Grammy Awards, a Brit Award, and numerous other accolades. Electro-Voice is very proud to be able to say that its products have helped the band achieve the high level of sound quality for which the band’s studio recordings and live shows are known. In particular, the RE27N/D was used for a large number of main vocal tracks on the Grammy Award-winning album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, engineered and produced by genius knob-tweaker Dave Fridmann.

Live, the band currently employs the following microphones: N/D868, RE20, N/D468, N/D478, Raven, Cardinal, N/D967, and N/D767a.

The band also used Electro-Voice loudspeakers in their guitar and bass amplifiers. Steve Drozd uses EVM-12L Classic loudspeakers in his guitar amplifier and bassist Michael Ivins uses DL10x and EVM-12L Classic loudspeakers in his bass rig.

About the Band: Official Band History

“These were not normal guys from normal families - you’re talking about freaks“

Michele Vlasimsky, Flaming Lips manager 1986-1990

“We’re just normal guys trying to make interesting music“

Wayne Coyne, head Flaming Lip, 2001

In actual fact, the truth probably lies somewhere between these two statements.
