EV ZX1 Provides Sound Solution at Miami House of Worship

September 8th, 2005

EV’s versatile new ZX1 speaker was a key element of the install, offering a level of performance and flexibility that belies its compact, lightweight size. DBS owner Harold Cummings explained how this surprisingly affordable PA package from EV helped surpass his customer’s expectations:

“The previous system used by the church was based around an eight-channel powered mixer head and two two-way 15-inch loudspeakers - clumsy, consumer grade gear that wasn’t doing the job for the 500-person congregation. Bishop Johnson asked me to design a system that would improve the sound quality, have reliable performance, and that would last. It was also important to keep the system simple, since there’s no dedicated sound engineer at the church. I specified equipment from EV that would provide an ideal balance of durability, sound quality and budget-friendliness. I knew I would be flying the loudspeakers, so I picked the QRx112 for both its ability to be flown horizontally or vertically, and also for its rotatable horn, which makes precisely adjusting the dispersion pattern easy. Q series amplifiers were selected because of their toughness, sound quality, and ease of use. I incorporated a single Sb121 to give the system some nice low end. RE-2 wireless systems with N/D767 capsules were also selected for their sound quality and sturdiness.

“But the stars of the show are the new ZX1 monitors,“ Cummings continued. “The ZX1 was - and is - new to the industry, so we had to wait a couple of weeks for them to be manufactured and delivered. The Bishop didn’t mind waiting, based on the cost and good rating I gave them, but they still needed to prove themselves worth waiting for. When I finally brought the four ZX1s in for installation, the Bishop looked at them and said “what are these little speakers going to do!? They won’t be loud enough’. It took me about 30 minutes to run the speaker cables through the stage and make the NL4 connections. Once I connected the speakers and turned them on (without the main house QRx loudspeakers), the Bishop asked me to run the monitors without the mains. With a smile I told him the QRx boxes weren’t on. The Bishop stood there listening, jaw dropped, scratching his head! I imagine ZX1 Is having a similar effect across the country - the sonic coverage, depth and clarity coming from that little box is nothing short of amazing.“

Cummings added: “A Church that holds 500 people needs a good sound system, but this is often accompanied by a misconception that professional quality sound is too expensive. Part of our job was to educate our customer as much as satisfy their requirements - the surprise with the ZX1 characterizes this. It’s simply about getting the right product for the job, and the ZX1 Line is designed to fulfill more application requirements than any other speaker available, all in a financially and physically manageable package. After the installation, Bishop Johnson told us: “You guys did everything you said you were going to do and in a timely manner; it sounds great and you gave us a very good system within our budget’. This PA has helped improve the whole worship experience at the Church, onstage and in the pews. That’s what it’s all about!“
