South Beach Hotel Steps up to EV

October 20th, 2006

“The hotel wanted their weekend DJ sets to have plenty of punch for the club crowd, but with the controlled SPLs and precise coverage necessary to comply with local noise ordinances and ensure guests remained undisturbed in other parts of the hotel,“ reported Gus Fuentes of Everlast. “A high-SPL single point stack of speakers was obviously inappropriate, so we spec’d a distributed system that would bring an even balance of zone control and high performance to the hotel’s bar, lobby and extensive terrace areas.“

Fuentes, along with Everlast’s Washington Arias (president), Micheal Deblois (tech.), Martin Fullone (tech.) and Robert Morgan (electrical), installed 40x EV ZX1i in white (28 outside, 12 inside) powered by 8x Dynacord S1200 and 2x Dynacord S900 amplifiers, and 8x EV Sb122 subs (outside) powered by 2x EV CP3000S amplifiers. During the day, the ZX1i boxes deliver crisp, clean audio for low-key ambient audio around the hotel, and at night there’s plenty of headroom on hand to reinforce the DJ sets in the hotel’s social areas.

“We set the system up with multiple inputs, so it can be accessed from the lobby and the back courtyard areas,“ Fuentes added. “There are ZX1i speakers mounted in the bars, hallways, game room, and pool areas. The effect is very subtle-the speakers blend into their surroundings, and so does the sound. The back garden terrace is about 100 x 40 feet, and we have Zx1is mounted in the bushes there too. The Sb122 subs-an ideal compact compliment to ZX1i-are also outside, adding some punch to the pool area, where things can be a little louder.

“Inside the hotel, subs were not an option,“ Fuentes continued, “so the fact that the ZX1i has impressive extended low-frequency response is a bonus-we simply have them running at a little lower volume, with the headroom feeding the lows. Clarity and intelligibility was also a big issue for us and for our clients, and the system also delivers impeccable audio between 600 Hz and 5 kHz. The volume can’t get very loud, but the sonic quality and definition remains seamless across a surprisingly wide range for such a compact box. The ZX1i delivers the whole package: sound, style and value-another work of art to add to the hotel’s collection!“
