EV Brings New Life to Akron University Arena

February 10th, 2006

Regional company AA Sound & Lighting, Inc., completed the design and installation. AA Sound’s Will Roth reported:

“We originally thought of installing a line array system in the JAR arena, but found the central suspended scoreboard to be prohibitive. After running more EASE models and looking at alternatives with Jason Jacquemain (of Telex Pro Audio Group reps CL Pugh), we found an application-specific solution in EV’s FRX+ boxes, which are designed for maximum directivity control in problematic reverberant spaces like this. The coverage and intelligibility these boxes offer in critical speech and music frequencies is excellent. Rather than settling for “less than a line array’, in FRX+ we found a real troubleshooter that was built for the job and exceeded our clients expectations. Now every seat in the house is covered with clear sound up to around 105 dB.“

AA Sound installed (12) FRX+940, (6) FRX+660 full-range boxes and (6) QRx218S subs. The system is powered by (8) P3000RL, (4) P1200RL remote control DSP amplifiers running IRIS software. A Midas Venice 160 is used for mixing the system. In addition, the system also features (2) Telex FMR-1000 wireless mic systems and (2) Telex BTR-800 wireless intercom systems with (8) TR-800 beltpacks.

Roth added: “Working with IRIS allowed us to preset the system for the various application scenarios that occur in the arena, maximizing the utility of the system without compromising its performance. Now, having completed our IRIS training sessions, the operators can easily change the system configuration at the touch of a screen, rather than trying to negotiate with a ton of complicated hardware. With IRIS, the end-user doesn’t have to be an expert to sound like one. We set up eight different user panels to control various audio zones and power distribution, including one for basketball games, one for graduation ceremonies, one for smaller volleyball games (no upper level coverage needed), and one for DVD/Scoreboard playback. The system sounds great across the board

“The feedback we’ve received from the stadium managers has been extremely positive,“ Roth continued, “it’s the best sound they’ve had in there since the arena was built in the early 1970’s. Now, rather than being an oversized gymnasium, the new sound system has opened up the possibilities, making the JAR a real multi-purpose space.“
