Sounds of the Underground Tour Hits High SPLs Loud & Clear with EV’ X-Line™

July 20th, 2005

The stadium tour is headlined by metal monoliths Lamb of God, with assistance from by such dark luminaries as Opeth, Strapping Young Lad and High on Fire. Special guests, gore-metal merchants and EV endorsers GWAR, add some stage blood and sick humor to the mix. Not for those of a delicate disposition! If one word describes the atmosphere - and the sound - at the shows, it’s INTENSE.

The rig that rouses the crowd is centered around EV’s mighty X-Line line-array, flown low at left and right to cover the pit right in front of the stage. Even in this configuration, there’s still plenty of long-throw SPL for the more sedate members of the audience sitting tight in the stadium seats. Though the X-Line is well known as a supremely transparent-sounding speaker system, in this headroom-hitting application its potential for high-SPL, knee-jerk-inducing punchiness is key: Sounds of the Underground isn’t about subtlety - it’s about rocking hard and loud at levels above 120dB. And, since the band’s backline rigs and vocal styles are already on the heavily distorted side of the fence, clear sound reproduction at super-high volume is another priority. GWAR FOH engineer and EV fan Jeremy Smith explained:

The X-Line is the machine that powers the mosh pit, and we’re running it full bore!

“I was really to happy to hear the tour was going out with EV mains, monitors and fills. I’m already a big fan of EV mics - nothing else stands up to the punishment GWAR puts them through - and getting to mix on the X-Line is an awesome experience on a tour like this. The system really needs to hit the crowd hard - the bands on the bill require a high degree of volume, intensity and power to deliver their various styles of metal and hardcore, and there’s no better rig, nothing else as muscular, that I can think of to get the job done. The X-Line is the machine that powers the mosh pit, and we’re running it full bore! People didn’t pay money to be gently caressed by sound on Sounds of the Underground - these shows are about complete immersion in visceral volume, and this X-Line rig really has the headroom to make that dynamic happen.“
