Cobb Audio Visual and Electro-Voice make a winning team for athletic field sound installations

Sound system installation for school athletic facilities presents the system designer and installer with a unique set of conditions. In outdoor settings such as playing fields, the scale poses challenges in terms of achieving power and coverage without distortion, and the weather can take its toll on systems that would be fine for indoor use. Indoor environments, on the other hand, are typically noisy and reverberant, making intelligibility a particular challenge.
In both cases the systems are likely to be operated by many different users, most of whom have no specialized audio knowledge, so the PA must be easy to use and difficult to damage or disable through errors or misuse. And schools often have restricted budgets, limiting the options for putting together a quality system that will hold up over the long term.
“There are very few outdoor-rated, weather-resistant loudspeakers of this quality.”
Mike Ward is intimately familiar with these challenges. As owner/operator of Cobb Audio Visual in suburban Atlanta’s Marietta, Georgia, he has overseen the installation of numerous school and college-level sound systems for both indoor and outdoor athletics. It’s a testament to the skill of Ward and his employees that Cobb’s primary source for athletic installations is referrals from existing customers. Ward, in turn, relies on Electro-Voice amplifiers and loudspeakers to deliver the quality and value that his customers expect. “As a general rule,” Ward says, “we tend to stick with a design that works. And over the years we have found that Electro-Voice loudspeakers and amplifiers make a great combination for these types of installs.”
Cobb recently installed Electro-Voice PA systems for outdoor athletics at a total of six facilities for two different schools in the greater Atlanta area. “Both customers came to us as word-of-mouth referrals from Cobb AVS customers,” he says. “We did the baseball and softball complexes at Georgia Perimeter College in Covington, and we did the baseball, softball, and multipurpose fields at The Lovett School in Atlanta, as well as an upgrade to their football stadium. That was five new installations and one system upgrade.”
Ward says that each of the six jobs required “a high-output, weather-resistant speaker system for accurate speech intelligibility and music playback during sporting events. We used Electro-Voice Sx Series loudspeakers and Q series amplifiers for all six.”
Ward’s high regard for the Sx series is based on his background of “many years in the audio industry. I have used Sx series speakers for many different application types. They are very versatile and reliable, and they provide a quality sound reinforcement solution at a reasonable cost. They are hard to beat in their price range.”
The Sx series is particularly well-suited for athletic fields because it is available in an outdoor-ready enclosure. “The SX500PI and SX300PI have proven to be ideal for these applications,” Ward says. “There are very few outdoor-rated, weather-resistant loudspeakers of this quality.”
Ward says he paired the Sx speakers with Q Series amps because the amps are “high output, reliable, and rock-solid. We have not had a single problem with any of the Q series amps that we have ever installed. It just made sense to install these amps and speakers together as a full EV package.”
With the six Electro-Voice installations now complete, the performance of the systems is continuing the cycle of positive results leading to additional business for Cobb. “All of the systems are functioning great with no problems,” Ward says. “The systems exceeded the clients’ expectations, and we continue to get their repeat business and referrals.”To learn more about Cobb Audio Visual Systems, LLC visit them online at www.cobbavs.com
